Fathers, sons, brothers and uncles all need to understand the dangers associated with prostate cancer. While this terrible and aggressive form of cancer generally affects older men from about forty and older, it is not impossible for someone younger to acquire the disease. This can lead to tragedy for the friends and family of those that don’t realize they are being attacked by cancer.

Early detection and treatment of this cancer leads to exceptionally high survival rates, which is of course the only good outcome. Unfortunately, in most men prostate cancer goes untreated for many years which gives the cancer far too much time to spread to a point in which treatments will not be effective and the cancer becomes lethal. To prevent this there are a few steps every post pubescent man should take the time to monitor.

Watch how often you’re urinating. This is one of the most common and noticeable symptoms of prostate cancer. You should check the flow and check for blood in your urine as well. While not as noticeable as the frequency, these can both be indicators of earlier stages of prostate cancer. And finally, every male over the age of twenty-five should have regular (annual or bi-annual) prostate exams and be tested for prostate-specific antigen on occasion. While PSA is always present, it becomes elevated when the prostate is under attack from cancer cells. If you follow these few preventative steps you can avoid tragedy and increase your survival chances if you’re diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is a cancer beginning in the prostate gland. It is a small structure the size of the walnut that wraps around the urethra and is part of a man’s reproductive system. Cancer of the prostate is common and the second leading form of cancer among men; one in every six men will contract prostrate cancer within their lifetime. Although it is the leading form of cancer, it only results in 10% of all cancer-related deaths among men. When diagnosed early, prostate cancer is extremely treatable, most men can continue living their normal lives for many years to come.

For these reasons, it is crucial that men pay attention to the early signs they may experience and go to the doctor at the first sign of trouble. Common symptoms include urinary difficulties, painful urination or bowel movements, painful ejaculation, lower back pain, lethargy, unusual weight loss, and lower abdominal pain. When you experience these symptoms, your body is telling you that something is not right and that a doctor’s visit may be required.

Once you arrive for medical treatment, you may be subjected to a number of tests. These tests include a PSA, AMACR, urinalysis, and/or a biopsy. If you are found with cancer, you will be staged to figure out how far along the cancer is. Based on your individual cancer rate, you will be treated with one of many treatment options including surgery, radiation, medication, or simple monitoring. If your cancer is diagnosed early enough, surgery may not even be required. The key, however, is early detection in order to provide optimum protection.
